ELECTRONIC ARTS TO USE AMD ATHLON PROCESSOR BASED SYSTEMS WORLDWIDE
- EA is recommending AMD based desktop and workstation systems to development, sales, finance, and marketing departments -
SUNNYVALE, CA—DECEMBER 20, 2001— AMD today announced Electronic Arts, a leader in PC and console games and the number one game site on the Internet, is recommending AMD AthlonTM XP and AMD AthlonTM MP processor-based desktop and workstation computers for its worldwide studios. Studios slated to use AMD systems include Westwood Studio in Las Vegas, EALA studio in Los Angeles, Slough studio in London, Tiburon studio in Orlando, Maxis studio in Walnut Creek, and studios in Redwood Shores, Seattle, Tokyo, Vancouver, and Melbourne.
EA decided to buy AMD based on custom tools written for multi-processor PCs with no processor specific optimizations used to benchmark game code for console games. These tests revealed that dual 1.2GHz AMD Athlon MP processor-based systems outperformed dual competitive systems by upwards of 33%. Electronic Arts will use these systems to develop and produce next generation PC and console games for franchises including John Madden Football, Harry Potter, and The Sims, and will implement AMD-based systems in their sales, finance, marketing, and administration departments.
“The performance, compatibility, and reliability of the AMD Athlon MP processor 1800+ and has led us to select it as part of the workstation development solution worldwide for Electronic Arts to help speed game design processes," said Scott Cronce, VP and chief technology officer, Electronic Arts Inc. “Additionally, the stability we have had with AMD Athlon XP processor-based desktop machines has given us reason to populate them in other departments in Electronic Arts.”
“The gaming community is a very important user base to AMD, and Electronic Arts has taken a leadership role with its high-demand, Internet-based games for that audience,” said Ed Ellett, vice president of Marketing at AMD. "With AMD’s workstation and server solutions and EA’s extensive game portfolio, the next generation of gaming will be delivered with reliability in real-time."
In the past, EA has trusted AMD’s technology and raw processing power to showcase their complete line up at E3 in Los Angeles and at two press conferences.
